A Real Life Rehab Lab

This renovation to the Inpatient Rehab department created a realistic set of everyday obstacles for recovering patients. There is a Front Porch where patients must negotiate a step, handrails, and rocking chairs.

A Cafe challenges the users to slip into a booth while dealing with limited furniture clearances. The "Bank" and computer station simulate ATM-like conditions of balance and small-motor manipulations. The Grocery Store provides a gamut of obstacles that require reaching, pulling, clearing tight aisles, and pushing a cart, which is sometimes weighted to provide a greater challenge.

The use of craft-painted "shingles", "shutters" and "siding" on the corridor side helped to reduce costs and still provide the desired small-town ambiance.
