This award winning library is designed to blend in to the historic fabric of downtown Southern Pines. The interior design intent echoes of the much-beloved former library, while better meeting the technical needs of the staff. The layout is carefully organized to allow for the diversity of patrons. The children’s section is at the opposite end of the long open reading room from the periodicals section, a favorite haunt of the senior patrons. Variations in ceiling heights, acoustically absorbent materials, and thoughtful detailing help to keep the overall noise levels very low. The juveniles section is placed right across from the resource desk to help keep young learners on track

The open wood-slat ceiling in the arched areas is warm and sound absorbent. Light spills into the reading room from above and into the stacks from the generous windows. The entire effect is one of quiet openness and light.
